People have different reasons for cheating, some do because they have lost compatibility with their partners, some cheat for mere fun, and some cheat because they can’t handle stress and pressures. Other possible reasons for infidelity are feeling unloved, disconnect between partners, sexual addiction, and unhealthy work life balance. No matter how good the reason is but this act is never right, more so, it is not the solution to any of the above issues. Having said this, it is crucial to find out the reason behind this cheating behavior and what motivates people to cheat on their partners.

Some human behaviors are genetic while some are a result of upbringing and circumstances around which an individual was raised. Some recent studies have found that cheating in a relationship might actually be genetic. Scientists think that there could be some link between infidelity and DRD4, also known as thrill-seeking gene. It is the same gene that is responsible for alcohol and gambling addiction.  In 2010, a study was conducted at Binghamton University, New York, where it was concluded that participants with DRD4 gene are more inclined towards cheating.

Another research was conducted by Justic Gracia to find out the connection between DRD4 and infidelity. For this study, 181 adults were interviewed along with their DNA taken for sample testing. It was discovered that 50% of adults with DRD4 gene have cheated on their partners. However, there is nothing definite about this study yet. More research needs to be done to find out more about different sexual behaviors.

There is another assumption made by the scientists after many researches that even if infidelity is genetic, it does not mean that the person carrying this gene will actually act upon it. Again, there is no study that proves this assumption. Scientists have expressed just a hunch about this subject.

Sexual behaviors of humans are very complex. Human behavior is a result of many things. It takes into consideration the relationship of a person with their parents, siblings, caretakers, etc. Furthermore, interaction with other humans also have an impact on the sexual behavior of an individual. For example, if a person have had sexual abuse experience or not. These experiences add to the overall behavior of a person and their sexual needs.
